 Mechanics and Control Processes Department     Polytechnical University     University Faculties

CompMechLab is based on Mechanics and Control Processes Department of St. Petersburg State Polytechnical University (SPbSPU) – recognized center of science and engineering. Two Vice-Rectors, 6 Heads of Departments, 20 Professors of SPbSPU are graduates of Mechanics and Control Processes Department.

According to the Bologna Process frameworks the students are educated in two cycles:

  • 1st cycle (4 years): awarding a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Mechanics;

  • 2nd cycle (2 years): awarding a Master’s degree in one of the following directions:
    Continuum Mechanics;
    -  Computational Mechanics and Computer-Aided Engineering (based on CompMechLab);
    Dynamics and Strength of Machines;
    BioMechatronics.

Currently the staff of Mechanics and Control Processes Department includes 1 Corresponding Member of Russian Academy of Sciences, 9 Professors, 7 Dr. Sc., 11 Associate Professors and PhD, 3 Assistant Professors including 1 PhD.

9 members of CompMechLab are participating in the curriculum of Mechanics and Control Processes Department and provide the following courses:

- Basics of Computer-Aided Design (2 terms). This course is realized by  Authorized Training Center  of  SolidWorks  that was founded in 2007 based on CompMechLab;

- Numerical Simulation in Theoretical Mechanics (1 term). The course is done on a basis of CAE software MSC.ADAMS;

- Computational Mechanics Practicum (5 terms) based on CAE software CosmosWorks, ANSYSLS-DYNA, MSC.Patran, MSC.Nastran, NEiNastran.

Training of students at Mechanics and Control Processes Department is based on deep fundamental education in physics and mathematics. The following courses are studied in the frameworks of bachelors training:

Higher mathematics (mathematical analysis, linear algebra, analytical geometry, vector and tensor calculus); experimental physics, mathematical physics, informatics and basics coding;  computational mathematics; theoretical mechanics; strength of materials.

During Maters training the following special courses are studied:

Analytical mechanics (1 term); theory of stability (1 term); linear and nonlinear theory of vibrations (2 terms); solid body dynamics; mechanics of continua (1 term), theory of elasticity (1 term), mechanics of beams and shells (2 terms); aero- hydrodynamics (1 term), fracture mechanics (1 term); theory of plasticity (1 term); computational mechanics (2 terms); computational composite mechanics (1 term), wave propagations (1 term); theory of optimization and optimization in mechanics (2 terms), theory of control (2 terms), mechatronics (1 term) and other.

After graduating from Mechanics and Control Processes Department the specialist is able to:

  • Develop mathematical models of the real world objects and processes;

  • Develop and apply numerical methods for engineering solutions;

  • Develop and apply science-intensive CAD/FEA/CFD/CAE for numerical simulation.
