Bombardier Uses modeFRONTIER to Optimize High-Speed Trains

Bombardier Transportation, part of the Bombardier Group headquartered in Canada, is a leading global supplier of high-speed and regional trains. Since the 1990s computer aided engineering (CAE) tools, such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and vehicle dynamics software have been increasingly used, to the point where they substitute to a great extent physical tests carried out. Traditionally, however, the design process has been driven by a team of engineers assessing the results of simulations, before deciding on how to modify the geometry in order to improve the performance. This can be a laborious process which involves many man-hours of effort, not just to decide which modifications should be carried out, but also to effect the changes, and rerun the simulation. In recent years, the German and Swedish based company has turned to modeFRONTIER to drive the design simulations, in order to try to achieve improved greater drag reduction, increased speed with lower traction power and increased cross-wind stability.
